Good work, that looks good. I use 6mm Motors with a 1.5mm shaft and the gear has also 1.5mm. There is no space between the first gear and the motor.
I have updated my double gear for 16mm. Now i'm waiting for the final Version and for the bras version.
Bras isn't very cheap but the weight will be much more.

Your problem between motor shaft to the spiral:

For example: motor shaft 1,5 mm, hole in spiral 2 mm. You take a short piece thick-walled brass tube with internal diameter of 1.5 mm. This side is for the shaft from the motor and the other side I drill at 2 mm. On motor I still use a brass wire 0.5 mm to connect this "coupling" and the motor shaft.
